Welcome to our lab at the University of Florida.
Children's minds are amazing. Our language and cognitive development lab examines children's acquisition of language and cognitive abilities. As described below one area of research involves the basic processes at language acquisition, such as word learning.
Also of interest is the interaction between language and thought. Specifically, theory of mind involves children's understanding the mental states of others and that their beliefs can differ from another's belief. This is referred to as "false belief understanding." We are exploring how language contributes to this development.
Please see below to learn more about our studies.

Neural Bases of Language and False BeliefIn addition to studying the language bases of false belief, we are also exploring the brain bases of this understanding. Children's and adults brain activity is measured while watching different types of false belief stories and language tasks..

Word Learning
Word learning takes place rapidly throughout childhood. We are interested in what supports and predicts successful word learning. More specifically, we look at individual differences among young word learners to determine which characteristics will lead to the most favorable outcomes. We are also interested in which types of teaching and input benefits successful word learning.
